hello my name is Kristen welcome to
0:09
learn English with be Global and in
0:13
today's lesson we are going to talk
0:15
about shopping and buying so I'd like to
0:20
start with the types of places that we
0:23
might shop or buy things at I know that
0:26
I love to shop and typically on a daily
0:29
BAS basis every day of Our Lives we need
0:32
to go to a store to get things to buy
0:35
things for ourselves for our family or
0:38
our friends so first I'd like to start
0:41
by going through a list of some of the
0:43
places that maybe we shop at on a daily
0:46
basis first one would be the grocery
0:49
store the grocery store has all of our
0:52
food items vegetables bread fruit milk
0:57
eggs it's a store that has everything
0:59
that you would need to go into your
1:01
kitchen to cook your food on a daily
1:04
basis the supermarket is like the
1:07
grocery store but usually it's much
1:10
larger so in a supermarket you would
1:12
have all of the food items that you need
1:15
to survive off of but in addition to the
1:18
food there's also going to be everything
1:21
that you would need for the bathroom
1:23
your toilet paper your paper towels all
1:26
of your cleaning supplies there will be
1:29
um items for your own use for the
1:31
bathroom maybe deodorant or hairspray um
1:34
basically anything that you need to help
1:36
get you through your day for
1:39
yourself they would have at the
1:41
supermarket so it's kind of a One-Stop
1:44
shop is one of the ways that we
1:54
say and what that means is you can make
1:57
one stop and get everything you need at
2:00
the supermarket typically the
2:02
supermarket won't have a large selection
2:04
of any clothing items they may have some
2:08
undershirts under t-shirts or socks or
2:11
possibly some underwear but for the most
2:14
part it's most mostly just those Staples
2:17
of food groceries and anything you might
2:21
need to keep the house clean or to use
2:23
in your bathroom those kinds of items
2:26
that you
2:27
need next on here I have the liquor
2:30
store or sometimes it's called a
2:32
convenience store those are typically
2:35
really small and yes they do have liquor
2:39
so there might be beer and wine or hard
2:42
alcohol as well meaning vodka or tequila
2:46
but they also carry little snacks um
2:50
other drinks lots of water or milk
2:54
orange juice different types of soda if
2:57
you wanted Coke or seven up there's
2:59
there's all sorts of drinks a large
3:02
variety of beverages for you to drink as
3:06
well as little things to snack on and
3:10
usually they will have a small section
3:13
that has some items that you might need
3:16
for convenience such as deodorant or a
3:20
sewing kit or something that you might
3:23
find that you left at home like your
3:24
toothbrush or toothpaste or something
3:28
like that but if you really need to find
3:30
an item that you know you're missing and
3:32
you need badly it's always better to
3:34
check a grocery store or a supermarket
3:37
before the convenience store because
3:39
they don't always have the same
3:41
things now the drugstore is a is a wide
3:44
term because a drugstore typically is
3:47
also a pharmacy but we also have
3:51
pharmacies that are truly only
3:54
pharmacies whereas a drugstore will have
3:57
a pharmacy where you can get your
3:59
medications that your doctor has given
4:01
you but then it's also going to have a
4:04
wide variety of items that you might
4:07
find at a convenience store but it's a
4:11
much larger selection so you can go to a
4:15
drug store and you can usually find
4:18
everything that you would need for the
4:20
bathroom you can usually get any lots of
4:24
different types of beverages as well as
4:26
food items they are usually more EXP
4:29
expensive if you are shopping at a drug
4:32
store for food items then they might be
4:34
at a grocery store because it's more of
4:37
a convenience that you're able to go to
4:40
the drugstore you can pick up your
4:42
medications and then you can also get
4:44
some things that you need for the home I
4:46
will say this though they do have great
4:48
sales at the drug stores and we will be
4:51
talking about the word sale in a
4:53
minute another place is a department
4:56
store and a department store is exactly
4:59
the way that it sounds it is a store
5:02
that is separated into different
5:04
departments so when you walk in you'll
5:07
have the women's Department there'll be
5:10
a men's department a children's
5:12
Department a lot of times there's a home
5:15
department and typically it's mostly
5:18
clothing shoes and things for your
5:22
home the mall which is one of my
5:25
favorites a mall or a shopping mall is a
5:28
place that you can go that is one big
5:31
building either inside or sometimes
5:34
outside that has several different types
5:38
of shops and stores all in one
5:42
location so when you know you need lots
5:45
of things maybe you need a new pair of
5:48
shoes and you also need a dress and
5:51
you're looking for a purse maybe there's
5:53
not one department store that you want
5:55
to go to for all of those things if you
5:57
want to have different options you can
6:00
go to the mall and then check out all
6:02
the different stores that are there to
6:04
find what it is that you
6:07
want and then of course there are
6:09
individual you know if there's a shoe
6:11
store obviously a shoe store sells shoes
6:15
there's toy stores a toy store would
6:18
sell toys so there are some individual
6:21
stores as well that sell only those
6:24
items that you're looking for and then
6:26
just a few other places that we go to on
6:28
a regular basis is the gas station the
6:32
gas station is where you take your car
6:34
to fill it up with fuel so that you can
6:36
drive it so we go to the gas station
6:39
pretty regularly to make sure that we
6:40
can continue to drive our
6:42
cars a restaurant is where you would go
6:45
to sit down and have a meal with friends
6:48
or family a diner or a cafe is just less
6:52
formal than maybe a restaurant so the
6:55
food is a little bit more relaxed the
6:58
people are a little bit more relaxed
6:59
reled and it's more
7:01
casual and then the most casual is fast
7:04
food which unfortunately is very popular
7:07
here in America but it is not very good
7:09
for you so fast food is somewhere that
7:12
is very inexpensive that you just walk
7:14
up you can order you food you can eat it
7:17
there or you can take it with you and
7:19
most fast food places even have
7:21
drive-throughs so you can take your car
7:24
drive through and make your food
7:26
purchase and then be on your way so
7:29
these these are just this is just a list
7:30
of a few common things that we may use
7:33
on a daily basis as we are thinking
7:35
about shopping and buying so today I
7:39
want to take you on a virtual shopping
7:41
trip with me so I need to go shopping
7:44
and the first thing that I need to think
7:46
of as I'm going on my shopping trip is
7:49
my
7:51
budget so what is a budget now your
7:55
budget is how much money you have to
7:57
spend on any given thing so some people
8:01
will take their entire budget and break
8:04
it down in what they have to spend on
8:05
bills what they have to spend on their
8:08
food what they have to spend on anything
8:11
it all just goes right into the budget
8:14
so today we're going to talk about my
8:16
budget for what I need and right now I
8:20
need a pair of pants a pair of shoes and
8:24
a sweater a sweater is kind of a thick
8:27
long sleeve shirt because it's starting
8:30
to get colder and I want to make sure
8:31
that I'm warm so I want to get those
8:34
three things and I need to make sure
8:36
that I create a budget and according to
8:38
my budget I have about
8:51
$150 for my budget for shopping so let's
8:55
talk about a couple different things
8:57
that people might say about a budget you
8:59
might hear on a tight
9:16
budget and if you're on a tight budget
9:18
that means you only have a certain
9:20
amount of money to spend you can't go
9:22
over it and you can't go under it you
9:24
have to stay right there within your
9:26
budget cuz you're on a tight budget
9:28
maybe somebody will say
9:29
sky is the
9:39
limit if sky is the limit that means
9:42
that you can spend as much as you want
9:44
because the sky is the limit it doesn't
9:47
matter how much you spend because you
9:49
have plenty of money for your shopping
9:51
vacation that you're taking now another
9:54
way that we can say that is shopping
9:55
spree when you are given a shopping
9:57
spree or you go on a shopping spree that
10:01
means that you can get anything you
10:12
want I would love to be given a shopping
10:15
spre so for the shopping
10:17
spree that can be let's say me and a
10:21
friend are going out and we'll put our
10:24
my shopping that I need for my clothing
10:26
aside and let's just talk about maybe
10:28
going to lunch so so a friend and I are
10:30
going to lunch there's a couple
10:31
different ways that this may happen if
10:33
you are out with a friend and one of the
10:36
things I might say is this one's on me
10:38
or this is my
10:48
treat that means that I'm going to pay
10:51
for this I'm offering to take care of
10:54
this meal for us this one is on me it is
10:57
my treat I'm another thing that you
11:00
might say is let's go
11:10
dutch and that means that we are each
11:13
going to pay for
11:15
ourselves so if we if we decide to go
11:18
dutch that means I pay for my meal and
11:20
she pays for her meal so it's going to
11:23
be separate does that make
11:25
sense so those are just a few different
11:28
things that happen when we're talking
11:29
about budget and how we're going to pay
11:31
for things now let's go on to my list so
11:34
as I said I'm making my shopping list
11:37
and I wanted to get a pair of
11:42
pants a pair of
11:45
shoes and a
11:49
sweater now it's important when you're
11:52
shopping that you go to the right place
11:54
to be able to get all of these things
11:56
and of course my favorite place to go to
11:59
have a great selection of items is the
12:03
all so that's where I'll be going to try
12:06
and find these things and what I want to
12:08
look at is I want to make sure that I
12:10
have the right
12:12
size size is how something
12:15
fits in America sometimes we have small
12:20
medium or large and other times it's
12:23
using a number system I know that I have
12:27
found personally that sometimes even
12:29
though sizes don't make sense so you
12:32
should always look at the item and if
12:34
you really like it try it on first just
12:36
to
12:38
see another important thing is
12:45
quality is it wellmade does it look like
12:48
it's going to fall apart or do you think
12:51
it will last me a long time because I
12:53
want something that's going to last a
12:55
long time but I don't need something
12:57
that's name brand
13:00
name
13:02
brand means that it has a designer
13:06
attached to it and typically if there is
13:09
a design designer name attached to the
13:12
tag or the label of the piece of
13:14
clothing it makes it tremendously more
13:19
expensive so if you can learn to avoid
13:21
the name
13:22
brands which I would call off
13:25
Brands if you use an offbrand
13:30
you can save some money and it will
13:32
still be a great quality
13:35
item so we have to look at size we have
13:38
to look at quality and then of course we
13:40
have to look at the
13:46
price the price is important because you
13:49
need to know how much something costs
13:53
before you purchase it and whether or
13:55
not it might be on sale
14:03
or have a
14:06
discount so I might ask someone that
14:09
works in a store how much is this
14:12
sweater what is the price of this
14:16
sweater or how much does this sweater
14:19
cost and she can tell me oh that sweater
14:23
is
14:25
$30 or she may say today we are having a
14:30
sale and there is a
14:32
discount on the sweater that you
14:35
like so it's 25% off of the price that's
14:40
on the
14:42
tag sometimes those sale prices will be
14:45
on the item and other times the sale
14:49
price will be taken off when you go to
14:52
purchase the item so if you're not sure
14:55
always ask you can say is this sweater
14:59
on sale how much will it cost and then
15:02
they will tell
15:04
you sometimes there may be a buy one get
15:07
one
15:16
free and in that case that means that I
15:19
get two sweaters but I only pay for one
15:23
I buy one sweater I get another sweater
15:26
for free so that's another type of sale
15:30
or discount or sometimes they may call
15:32
it a
15:41
promotion so now it comes to purchasing
15:44
my
15:45
items I have found the things that I
15:48
need I have stayed within my budget and
15:52
now I'm ready to
15:56
pay so when it comes time for me to pay
15:59
my money I will go up to the counter
16:02
where the salesperson works and I will
16:06
give her the
16:12
items him or her the items so I will go
16:16
to the salesperson I will hand her or
16:19
him my items that I want to purchase and
16:22
then she will ring them
16:26
up that means
16:32
that she is going to take each of the
16:34
items and log in how much they cost
16:38
either with a scanner or by hand she
16:40
will ring them up and then she will tell
16:43
me what the total cost is once I have
16:46
that total cost I can then choose to pay
16:50
with
16:53
cash cash is always accepted there are
16:57
some places in very small shops that
17:01
will only accept cash but mostly
17:04
especially at a mall they will also
17:06
accept your credit
17:13
card your credit card can can either
17:16
come from a line of credit that you have
17:19
established that you have to pay back or
17:22
you can also use your debit card
17:30
and that takes money straight from your
17:32
bank over to the store to pay for your
17:36
items you want to make sure after you
17:38
pay that you always get a
17:45
receipt the receipt is going to be your
17:49
recollection and your record of
17:51
everything that you have bought to make
17:53
sure that if there are any problems with
17:55
the items after you leave the store you
17:58
can can go back and usually on that
18:01
receipt it will tell you what their
18:03
return policy
18:09
is you can usually return an item and
18:13
either they will give you store credit
18:15
which means that you get a credit at the
18:18
store to purchase another item or they
18:21
will give you a refund
18:33
if you are thinking at all that you
18:35
might not be happy with your purchase be
18:38
sure to ask about the return policy
18:41
before you purchase your items and make
18:43
sure that you keep your receipt so that
18:46
you are able to bring that back if you
18:48
need to to get your refund or your store
18:51
credit so I hope that all of this is
18:54
great I appreciate you shopping with me
18:57
today I feel like we shopped till we
18:59
dropped that means that we are excited
19:03
and
19:05
tired because we shopped so
19:08
much another way of saying we shopped
19:11
all day we got so many things and now we
19:14
are done so I encourage you to shop till
19:18
you drop I hope that all of these things
19:20
