0:04
well hi again this is Jan at learn
0:06
English with B Global and today we're
0:10
going to learn about how to speak
0:12
English fluently and
0:15
confidently you've heard it said that
0:18
English is a work in
0:20
progress have fun with it I I hope you
0:24
know that uh English
0:27
is uh people disagree about how you
0:30
should speak English so I hope that you
0:32
know you don't have to worry about
0:35
certain uh parameters in spoken English
0:41
fluency has to do with uh
0:45
communicating okay not Perfection so
0:50
take a deep breath and relax and
0:52
actually we're going to talk today about
0:55
the
0:56
circus uh why the circus well I just
0:59
chose that because it's a fun short word
1:03
that will help us grow in our navigation
1:07
of being confident when we speak
1:10
English so if you want to get out a
1:13
piece of paper or or something write it
1:17
like like this
1:20
across these letters will help you
1:23
remember our main idea so what does the
1:26
first letter stand for well the first
1:29
first letter C stands for confidence
1:33
comes before fluency okay I have up here
1:39
fluency does not does not equal
1:44
grammatical
1:46
Perfection okay um no one ever said
1:51
fluency means speaking English perfectly
1:54
that's that's not true it means speaking
1:58
English with e
2:01
so I want you uh
2:03
to um move toward
2:06
fluency by gaining confidence but you've
2:09
got to have the confidence first
2:14
um know that there is no native English
2:19
speaker anywhere that speaks
2:22
English
2:23
flawlessly without uh errors or mistakes
2:28
so the C confidence comes before fluency
2:33
the I stands for ignoring the grammar
2:37
police you know who the grammar police
2:40
are right they're the people that are
2:42
always correcting you and uh they they
2:47
may even just be in your head you're
2:49
like oh I I I said that wrong or just
2:54
forget them don't worry about those P
2:57
these people should not stop you from
3:00
trying uh hard they're not they don't
3:03
have any power over you okay so ignore
3:06
them ignore the grammar police outside
3:09
or maybe the ones in your head so I have
3:14
been teaching International students for
3:16
over uh 20 years in the US okay the ones
3:21
that I
3:22
remember uh well are not the ones that
3:27
spoke English perfectly they are the
3:31
ones that tried that smiled that had fun
3:35
and these are the ones that made a lot
3:38
of mistakes but they learned from their
3:40
mistakes or or maybe they never learned
3:43
from their mistakes and it doesn't
3:45
matter because they became part of
3:48
almost part of our family because they
3:50
had such a great attitude and uh they
3:54
just kept trying and they had fun and
3:56
they knew it wasn't the end of the world
3:59
if they didn't say something exactly
4:03
right and in fact I can remember them
4:05
better because of their
4:07
attitude so fight through the fear of
4:11
making mistakes okay uh learn to laugh
4:14
at yourself I know sometimes that's hard
4:18
um but when we laugh at ourselves it
4:21
gives other people permission to correct
4:25
you and not be afraid uh that they're
4:28
going to hurt you and hopefully they
4:30
will correct you gently but if you're
4:32
like oh how do I say that right then
4:36
they'll say Okay um uh this is how you
4:40
should really say this
4:42
phrase uh so let's go back to the circus
4:46
we've got the C it stands for confidence
4:50
comes before fluency all right so we're
4:53
trying to talk about confidence here the
4:57
I stands for ignore ignore
5:00
the grammar police just ignore
5:02
them um R stands for recognize what
5:08
motivates you all right um why do we try
5:12
something that's hard like uh learning
5:15
another language um something is
5:18
motivating us right you care enough if
5:22
you're motivated enough to maybe even
5:26
look a little silly
5:28
sometimes then you know your motivation
5:30
is really high right and that is great
5:34
uh because uh once you figure out what
5:37
you what you love then that will that
5:41
motivation will carry you and that
5:44
hopefully will Bloom into English
5:48
fluency because you're willing to do the
5:51
daily work of of learning new things so
5:55
it's a big deal motivation is a big deal
5:59
recogn recognize what motivates you um
6:02
and I can't figure that out for you uh
6:05
so later on I'm going to be giving you
6:08
some tips on
6:10
fluency and maybe you're like hurry up I
6:14
just want to hear uh if you're
6:17
not uh motivated these tips aren't going
6:20
to matter so you've got to figure out
6:22
what motivates you and not just what
6:24
motivates you today but for uh the long
6:28
uh the long Hall as we say the long road
6:32
okay so back to the circus circus
6:37
confidence comes before fluency
6:41
okay
6:42
ignore the grammar police don't worry
6:46
about grammar don't worry about making
6:49
mistakes are
6:51
recognize what motivates you okay you're
6:54
going to need that the next C the next C
6:57
is to call people who encourage
7:00
you speaking English
7:03
confidently should really take place in
7:07
the context of a positive community and
7:10
that will improve your confidence
7:13
because as I reminded you confidence
7:17
comes before
7:19
fluency and also you remember you need
7:24
to ignore who the grammar police right
7:28
don't be afraid of making mistakes are
7:31
recognize what motivates
7:34
you C call people who encourage
7:39
you the U stands for understand that we
7:44
are all moving at different speeds if
7:48
you have had a bad English day that
7:52
doesn't Define you all right remember
7:54
that um you may need to write that down
7:58
we all have bad bad language days um but
8:04
that doesn't Define who you are so don't
8:07
compare yourself with someone else okay
8:11
so final time here at the
8:14
circus is you gain confidence first
8:18
before fluency you
8:20
ignore the grammar police
8:24
recognize uh what motivates you call
8:29
people who encourage
8:30
you
8:32
understand uh that we're all starting a
8:35
at different places we're all going at
8:37
different speeds it's okay the S is
8:41
start
8:42
small you gain confidence by starting
8:45
small right set little goals and then
8:48
these little accomplishments they build
8:50
on each other right that happens for
8:53
everything we do uh especially for
8:56
language
8:57
Learners so on to our fluency
9:01
tips number one set a time to practice
9:07
every
9:09
day if you set this time you will turn
9:12
it into a habit and that will be
9:15
something that you go to and you know
9:18
that you'll be practicing English every
9:21
day but before we jump into the rest of
9:24
these tips I want you to think about how
9:27
you learn because really uh if you try
9:31
these tips that I'm going to give you uh
9:34
and you don't know how you learn best
9:36
it's going to be more
9:38
frustrating uh so for brevity's sake
9:43
let's just talk briefly about four
9:46
different kinds of Learners okay so we
9:50
have the
9:52
visual the
9:55
auditory the kinesthetic the
9:58
doer and the reading and writing
10:02
learner so think about which one you
10:06
might be most naturally you may be a lot
10:09
of these and probably are but uh if you
10:13
think about whether your visual auditory
10:16
can aesthetic or reading and writing as
10:20
we go through the rest of these tips
10:23
that will help you increase your fluency
10:26
hopefully uh to speed up your
10:30
fluency well so you've already set a
10:34
time to practice every day right so what
10:39
are you going to do during this practice
10:42
time well I suggest that you practice
10:45
your English 15 minutes every day some
10:50
kind of short
10:52
phrase and maybe you can pick that out
10:54
from a from a good book a grammar book
10:58
or some book that has the the correct
11:01
way to say it so practicing that phrase
11:05
um will be will be good for you and just
11:08
doing 15 minutes uh is just a small
11:12
reasonable goal all right it's um it's
11:16
like the s in Circus we talked about
11:18
starting small and you can do 15 minutes
11:22
a
11:23
day well what's practicing a phrase 15
11:27
minutes a day going to look like
11:29
for
11:31
you how can we get that discipline to
11:34
move from your brain to actual
11:39
conversation well if you're a visual
11:42
learner you may need to find a phrase
11:46
that you can see as a picture or or a
11:51
movie TV something like that some some
11:55
picture that represents what that phrase
11:58
looks like and practice the phrase while
12:01
you're looking at that so it can it can
12:04
stick in your mind longer okay if you're
12:07
an auditory learner if you like to learn
12:11
uh if you're it's easier for you to
12:12
learn just to listening to listen to
12:15
something you could talk about that
12:19
phrase um to someone else you could also
12:23
listen to a short um audio uh lecture
12:29
about that phrase while you're going to
12:31
school or while you're working
12:34
out uh you could also just record your
12:37
your voice saying that phrase over and
12:40
over and listen to it and that's could
12:43
be how you spend that that 15 minutes uh
12:46
are you a reading and writing
12:49
learner well experts will say that you
12:52
probably work best in quiet areas and
12:56
you do well to write out that phrase
12:59
several times um eventually you're going
13:02
to need to say the phrase um and we will
13:06
get to that but uh when you write it out
13:10
that will be helpful for you you uh
13:12
probably enjoy flash cards and those
13:15
will be great uh for your style of
13:20
learning uh if you are a can athetic
13:24
learner that means you like to do things
13:26
or feel things those flash cards if you
13:30
write them out uh and you have those
13:34
make those into a game uh make it fun
13:37
for you um and you can learn while
13:40
you're physically doing something you
13:44
may even take the phrase
13:47
and uh do a dance to it or something if
13:51
the phrase is I like to dance well maybe
13:54
you dance while you do it or if you like
13:57
to cook uh if the phrase is I like to
14:01
cook then um you can cook while you say
14:05
the phrase I like to
14:10
cook so uh do you see what I mean uh
14:13
becoming fluent takes work but if you
14:16
can link it to some some way that you uh
14:20
something that you know how to do
14:22
naturally that you a way that you learn
14:26
naturally then maybe you won't want to
14:28
give up and you'll keep trying to do
14:30
that okay okay tip number three find
14:34
someone with whom you can practice after
14:37
you've made it your Habit to set a time
14:41
every day to
14:43
practice and you've decided to practice
14:46
15 minutes every
14:48
day find someone with whom to practice
14:53
and remember just go for it don't worry
14:55
about making a mistake uh just keep
14:58
trying
14:59
so the fourth fluency tip I have for you
15:03
is to form your schedule around
15:07
practicing English so what do I mean by
15:10
that well most people are very busy
15:14
right so schedule a time of English
15:17
practice with someone over a
15:20
meal uh you both have to eat so just
15:24
decide that for that one meal maybe once
15:28
a week maybe more times a week all
15:31
you're going to do is speak English
15:34
while you're eating together I think
15:37
that's a a great way to do that or you
15:41
may find someone who uh likes to
15:44
exercise on a regular basis most people
15:47
do and so if you can just form your
15:52
schedule around just exercising with
15:56
that person whether it be walking or
15:58
playing some kind of game and practicing
16:02
English only English while you're doing
16:05
that then you're not having to set up
16:07
this separate time in your schedule uh
16:11
to open a book and work on your English
16:15
it's just a part of natural life and so
16:18
you'll learn some of those skills and
16:20
increase your
16:21
fluency if you have friends who go to
16:24
church every Sunday or if they are
16:26
participa in weekly community
16:30
activities ask if you can join them um
16:33
many of my students have told me they
16:35
improved their English by going to
16:38
church once a week because at church we
16:41
read we speak we listen and we sing in
16:46
English so you're getting almost all of
16:48
the learning styles in just a couple
16:51
hours also they have said uh the Bible
16:56
is a great text for Pro proper
16:59
grammatical English and so they can
17:02
count on that if they want to learn how
17:03
to say something right that's just a
17:07
thought so number four form your
17:10
schedule around practicing
17:15
English tip number five identify objects
17:20
in
17:21
English what does that mean means find a
17:25
Post-It note write out oven and put it
17:29
on your
17:31
oven mirror put it on your
17:34
mirror identify everything in your house
17:38
that you can in English so you are
17:43
surrounded by English words when you
17:46
wake up in the morning you see them when
17:48
you go to bed at night you see them and
17:51
then once you have
17:54
become comfortable and you have
17:57
memorized these nouns
17:59
then you can add a verb in front of them
18:02
choose any verb you like you know we
18:05
like our verbs and our nouns together so
18:08
you can practice them so you're immersed
18:11
in English and then that will help you
18:14
begin to start thinking in English and
18:17
that also will increase your
18:21
fluency dip number six use good media
18:26
resources like you're doing right now
18:28
now use or watch English television or
18:33
English movies or listen to English
18:37
music and choose those media options
18:42
based upon your goals and what I mean is
18:46
if your goal is to be a
18:51
professional uh business man or woman uh
18:54
then choose those media options that
18:58
have vocabulary related to your career
19:01
field and then that will help you in the
19:04
interview so think think that through um
19:09
because I don't want you to waste good
19:11
brain memory on
19:13
information that is not helpful and
19:16
might even be confusing to you as you're
19:20
trying to remember things for a good
19:22
interview or a promotion or something
19:25
like that just a final tip
19:29
uh don't learn profanity in English if
19:33
it's not going to help you achieve your
19:36
goal uh save space in your brain for
19:39
phrases that will help you achieve your
19:42
ultimate
19:44
objective that's just a final thought
19:47
now the good news for you is that you
19:49
have already done fluency tip number six
19:53
by watching this educational English
19:56
video and I hope you've learned some
19:58
about speaking confidently and fluently
20:01
in
20:03
English thanks for watching and if you
