hi this is Kristen at learn English with
0:09
be Global and today we are going to talk
0:12
about remembering vocabulary in the
0:15
English language I know that sometimes
0:17
it can be hard and very overwhelming
0:19
when you think of all the vocabulary
0:21
that you have to learn when you are
0:23
learning a language so I'd like to be
0:25
able to help you out today with some
0:26
tools on how to remember some of that
0:29
vocab ulary now I've started with three
0:32
basic principles that I think are key to
0:35
remembering English vocabulary we have
0:38
Reading Writing and
0:41
speaking I think all three of these are
0:44
very important when it comes to any sort
0:47
of vocabulary that you are trying to
0:48
learn and remember I think it's
0:51
important to remember to reread your
0:54
vocabulary every day as often as you can
0:58
I think it's important to write it down
1:00
down and write it down with a pencil or
1:02
a pen on paper not on your computer I
1:05
think typing is very different than
1:08
writing it by hand and I also think it's
1:11
very important to speak it out loud the
1:13
more that you speak it out loud the more
1:16
that your brain registers it as
1:18
vocabulary coming through your body and
1:21
out into the air it's very different so
1:25
let's start with reading when you're
1:27
looking for vocabulary to read I I
1:30
recommend that you find some children's
1:31
books any children's books will do the
1:35
nice thing about a children's book is
1:36
that it is written in very simple
1:40
language so when you find a children's
1:49
book they usually tell very simple
1:52
stories and the vocabulary will give you
1:55
the basic vocabulary that you need to
1:57
learn for the language and it will also
1:59
tell tell you a story that will help you
2:01
remember and give you a place to put
2:03
that vocabulary in sentences that you
2:06
will be able to then use for your
2:08
everyday life so I recommend that you
2:12
read children's books another good thing
2:14
to read when you're learning
2:19
vocabulary are
2:24
magazines and
2:28
newspapers
2:34
magazines and newspapers also usually
2:37
use very similar vocabulary to the type
2:39
of vocabulary that you're going to be
2:41
using every day words about weather or
2:44
colors or fashion or people things that
2:48
you're going to want to know and things
2:50
that the people will be using in their
2:51
everyday language so it's going to help
2:53
you remember those vocabulary words that
2:55
you've been trying to remember on a
2:57
daily basis so I recom recommend that
3:00
you read every chance that you get the
3:04
next thing that I'm going to recommend
3:06
is that you write what I suggest is that
3:09
you pick a
3:15
theme a theme is a set of words in your
3:19
vocabulary that are all alike that is
3:23
going to help your brain remember that
3:25
all of these words are very similar
3:27
which is going to help your brain
3:29
memorize those words when you're trying
3:31
to learn the vocabulary so pick one
3:35
theme each week that will help you
3:37
remember the words for your vocabulary
3:39
lesson that week some examples of a
3:42
theme might be
3:47
food so maybe you would do breakfast
3:50
foods you could do vegetables or you
3:54
could do dinner foods um anything fruits
3:59
all kinds of foods you could probably
4:01
spend an entire month just on the
4:03
vocabulary of food however you want to
4:07
make sure that you're using food words
4:09
that you're going to use every day so
4:12
that it really helps you in your
4:13
vocabulary and in expanding your
4:16
language so food is just one example you
4:19
might want to do
4:26
weather is it cold is it hot
4:30
is it raining or sunny and then you can
4:33
even do directions north south east west
4:40
um there's a lot going with weather too
4:42
so there's many different things you can
4:44
do colors is another good
4:51
theme when you're doing themes you're
4:53
going to remember in your brain all of
4:55
those words that are alike and it's
4:58
going to help you remember those
5:00
vocabulary words so as you're doing your
5:03
theme here are some things that you can
5:05
write down to help you remember your
5:08
vocabulary I recommend that you use
5:11
flash
5:19
cards when you do flash cards you take a
5:22
little piece of paper you write down the
5:25
vocabulary word on one side in the
5:28
English language and then write down the
5:31
same word in your language on the other
5:33
side that way you can test your brain as
5:36
you're looking at that card maybe make
5:39
10 or 15 cards a day that you plan on
5:43
studying and then each day you pull out
5:46
those cards maybe while you're at lunch
5:48
maybe while you're at dinner you pick a
5:51
time and you do those cards to practice
5:53
every day flashcards are a wonderful way
5:56
to study vocabulary and to help remember
5:59
those words
6:00
another great way to remember is to take
6:03
notes that are sticky and put them on
6:06
things around your home to help you
6:08
remember what those things are so let's
6:12
say you're in the kitchen and you're
6:14
making dinner you have the box in the
6:17
kitchen that keeps all of the food cold
6:21
do you remember what that's called that
6:24
would be called The
6:26
Refrigerator so you could take a little
6:29
note like
6:31
this and you could write
6:36
refrigerator on that note and then stick
6:39
it onto the refrigerator in your kitchen
6:42
that way every time you walk by the
6:45
refrigerator you will see the note if
6:48
you put those notes on little things
6:50
around your home it will remember you it
6:52
will help you remember the names of all
6:55
of the things in your home and you will
6:57
see them all the time which will give
6:59
you a constant reminder of those
7:03
words another great example of writing
7:06
down your vocabulary words is making a
7:15
list when you're making a list here is
7:18
what I
7:21
recommend let's use animals as our theme
7:25
for this week and let's say I'm going to
7:28
make a list for my
7:30
animals I'm going to make a list on one
7:34
side in English so I have
7:39
cat
7:42
dog
7:45
fish and
7:50
horse on the other side you're going to
7:54
write down those same words in your own
7:57
native language so so you will write
8:01
cat
8:03
dog
8:05
fish and horse in your language on the
8:09
other side then you'll take your list
8:13
you'll fold it in half and you'll cover
8:16
one side so you can test yourself again
8:21
it's like the flashcards but it's a
8:23
different way of
8:24
testing and you can test yourself
8:28
against your list to see if you remember
8:30
which words the words that you have a
8:33
hard time with you make another list
8:37
over here I have a hard time remembering
8:42
fish so I'm going to write that down
8:44
over there and then I'm going to create
8:47
another list to make sure that I study
8:49
more
8:50
often a list is another great way to
8:53
write down your vocabulary and to help
8:55
you
8:57
listen I'm another fantastic way to help
9:01
you remember vocabulary is to speak
9:05
it one way is just to Simply as you are
9:09
going through these F flash cards and
9:12
your lists is to just say them out loud
9:17
instead of only reading say them
9:21
cat
9:23
dog
9:25
fish horse maybe even record your
9:33
voice or if you have a friend that you
9:36
can study with talk to a
9:48
friend and the very most important thing
9:51
to remembering vocabulary is to practice
9:56
practice
9:57
practice we have have a saying we like
9:59
to use here and it is called use it or
10:04
lose
10:17
it what that means is if you don't
10:21
practice it if you don't use these words
10:25
on a regular basis you will forget them
10:28
so you have have to practice you have to
10:30
use them every day whenever you can and
10:34
be patient it will take a long time
10:37
there's a lot of words but that's okay
10:40
as long as you take some time every day
10:43
set your goals set your themes and spend
10:47
some time every day to
10:50
read to write and to speak you will be
10:55
able to remember your
10:56
vocabulary thank you so much for joining
