hello I'm Kristen welcome back to learn
0:10
English with be Global I look forward to
0:12
teaching you today and today we are
0:15
going to talk about the weather so the
0:18
weather is basically what's it like
0:21
outside what is the weather like what is
0:24
the
0:25
temperature how does it feel typically
0:29
talking about the weather is something
0:31
very common for all people to discuss so
0:34
it doesn't matter where you come from
0:36
what language you speak what nationality
0:38
you are what race you are none of that
0:41
matters we all know about the weather we
0:45
all go outside and feel what it feels
0:47
like out there so today I want to be
0:50
able to talk to you about how you can
0:52
talk about the weather in English and
0:54
different things that you can say so
0:58
many times someone will ask you
1:00
what is the weather like
1:04
today they may
1:09
say what is the weather
1:21
like or maybe
1:24
even how does it feel outside
1:36
and typically you want to say it feels
1:39
nice if it in fact feels nice nice means
1:45
that you can go outside you can do
1:47
anything you need to do outside the
1:49
weather is Pleasant it's a positive
1:52
thing it's not too hot it's not too cold
1:56
it's not raining it's just nice it's
1:59
nice outside
2:00
if someone tells me that it's nice
2:02
outside that means I would be able to go
2:04
and have a picnic lunch in the park or I
2:07
can take my dog for a walk and I don't
2:09
have to worry about any part of the
2:11
weather affecting what I need to do
2:13
outside that's when you say that it's
2:16
nice so we're going to start here and
2:18
talk about what it's like when it gets
2:20
to be a little bit
2:26
warm if it's warm out that means that
2:29
the sun is shining like my drawing of my
2:32
sun here that means that the sun is
2:34
shining and that it feels good but it's
2:37
warm so it's not cold um you want to
2:41
make sure that maybe you have a hat just
2:42
in case and you want to dress lightly
2:46
because it is warm outside then we go
2:49
from warm to
2:54
hot and there are two different types of
2:57
heat that can happen when you're outside
2:59
there can be be a dry heat or there can
3:02
be a wet
3:13
heat in a dry heat the sun is beaming
3:18
shining down on you and it feels like
3:21
it's right here it feels like the sun
3:25
you could just reach out and touch it
3:26
because it is so hot and it's dry it's
3:32
very dry meaning there's no moisture in
3:36
the air there's no water on the ground
3:39
it's just a truly dry heat and that's
3:44
when you feel like you're burning up
3:46
because it's so
3:52
hot or someone might say it's a scorcher
3:56
today it's scorching hot outside
4:07
now with a wet heat we usually will say
4:11
that it's very
4:17
humid humidity means that there is a lot
4:20
of moisture in the air so it makes
4:23
things feel very sticky and it makes
4:26
things very uncomfortable when it's hot
4:30
and it's humid you feel like there's a
4:32
layer of water and stickiness on you all
4:36
the time and it just feels heavy the air
4:40
feels heavy it makes everything very wet
4:44
and very sticky and very hot and humid
4:50
and when it's humid there's a lot of
4:52
Island places anywhere anyone that lives
4:54
near the islands whether it be Hawaii or
4:57
the Caribbean or even the Mediterranean
4:59
there's a lot of humidity there we don't
5:01
get a lot of humidity here in California
5:04
every now and then we will sometimes it
5:07
will come in waves and they'll say
5:09
there's an there's an upcoming Heat
5:17
Wave and that heat wave is bringing
5:20
humidity with it and with a heat wave
5:22
typically it lasts 3 or 4 days it can
5:26
last up to a week or two but when they
5:28
forecast a heat wave you know then that
5:31
there's coming soon a big wave of heat
5:35
and it's going to be hot it's going to
5:37
be abnormally hot or warm and not like
5:41
it typically is and when we talk about
5:44
Seasons there's four seasons throughout
5:47
the year we have
5:49
summer
5:51
fall winter and spring and those
5:55
different seasons for different areas
5:58
the weather changes all the time time so
6:01
typically all of these hot days all of
6:05
the humid days would fall in
6:11
summer notice I said fall in summer what
6:16
I should say is they take place in
6:18
summer I was speaking of these these
6:21
types of temperatures when it's really
6:23
hot is typically in
6:26
summer sometimes it can cross over in to
6:29
fall but usually it's just in summer and
6:34
then as we get to fall we start to kind
6:36
of cool down a little bit so before we
6:40
get to the Colder Weather I also want to
6:42
talk about
6:44
thunderstorms rain storms lightning do
6:47
you guys know what that is so when we
6:50
have a lot of clouds it gets really
6:52
cloudy typically it's cooler when it's
6:56
cloudy but not always so we're going to
6:59
go ahead and put the Cloudy
7:03
here and I drew my little picture of a
7:05
cloud up here that's my cloud um clouds
7:08
can be white they can be gray they can
7:11
be black and when they begin to be gray
7:14
or black then you know there's water
7:15
forming in those clouds then you know
7:18
it's going to
7:23
rain and this is my little bit of rain
7:27
so we have to realize that we we can
7:29
have rain in the Heat or in the cold it
7:34
happens both times and it's the same
7:36
word Whenever there is water falling
7:38
from the sky we call that rain
7:41
regardless of what the temperature
7:44
is so we have rain and with rain a lot
7:48
of times we will have
7:51
thunder and we will have
7:57
lightning here's my little
8:01
lightning that's a horrible drawing of
8:03
lightning so lightning is when
8:06
electricity shoots from the sky it's
8:08
usually really bright and it usually
8:10
comes down from the cloud like
8:13
this to the ground and it's a big
8:16
lightning bolt or a big bolt of
8:20
lightning and if there's lightning
8:22
there's thunder thunder is that big
8:25
grumbling noise that's really loud and
8:28
it's very scary if you're not used to it
8:31
so thunder makes a really really loud
8:34
noise it's all of the elements of the
8:36
weather kind of running together and
8:38
making this big grumbling sound and then
8:41
lightning is what you see after the
8:43
Thunder as a lightning bolt that comes
8:46
down from the sky in a big flash of
8:48
light it's like a big beam of crooked
8:52
light that comes down and you have to be
8:54
very careful when you're in a rainstorm
8:57
and there is thunder or lightning
8:59
there's also
9:00
thunderstorms in which case it's a big
9:03
storm with rain and lots and lots of
9:07
thunder so that kind of goes through
9:09
those thunderstorms and lightning can
9:11
happen in the Heat or in the cold and
9:14
they truly in many parts of the world
9:17
can happen in any season you just never
9:20
know so as we go into fall things start
9:23
to cool down a little bit
9:29
so it can feel cool outside so maybe
9:32
you'll need like a little sweater or
9:34
maybe a little light jacket you might
9:37
want to wear a hat if it's really if
9:39
it's really chilly when it starts to get
9:41
chilly then you know that you're cold
9:44
the chilliness let me put the word
9:50
chili if someone says it's chilly
9:53
outside that means we've gone past the
9:56
point of it just being cool and
9:58
comfortable it it's definitely not nice
10:01
and it's actually getting cold so you
10:04
want to make sure that you have a jacket
10:07
or something to help
10:08
you and then as we go down people will
10:12
Al also say that it's
10:15
crisp or
10:18
brisk outside and these are all very
10:21
common for
10:28
fall and that's typically when it's
10:30
still very comfortable you may get a
10:32
little bit of rain and when it just
10:34
starts to rain but it's really really
10:36
light and you can barely even see that
10:38
we call it
10:44
drizzle and then as those raindrops
10:47
become a little bit more we start to
10:50
call it a Sprinkle so the drops are
10:53
coming down but they're not coming down
10:55
a lot
11:03
and then once they really start to come
11:06
down then we've got a ton of water and a
11:09
ton of rain and we would say that it is
11:12
pouring outside we use the word
11:16
pouring pouring
11:23
rain so with the pouring rain then you
11:27
know that everything is just getting
11:30
soaked I got soaked that means my whole
11:33
body was just covered in water all of my
11:37
clothes are wet I'm
11:44
soaked and then as it starts to get even
11:47
colder it starts to be freezing it's
11:51
freezing outside that means it's really
11:55
really cold
12:03
and if you add that freezing to
12:07
rain it starts with hail and that hail
12:11
are basically tiny little pieces of ice
12:14
that are coming down they can be tiny
12:17
sometimes they can grow to be quite big
12:19
and they don't feel very good when they
12:20
hit you because they're hard it's almost
12:23
like it's raining ice cubes or little
12:25
pieces of ice and we call that hail
12:31
as it starts to get even colder that
12:35
hail will turn to a powdery white
12:38
substance that we then call
12:41
snow and then that's more of a blanket
12:44
of white and it's a really light kind of
12:46
shaved ice that falls
12:54
everywhere and when we have a
12:56
combination of rain
12:59
hail and snow we call that sleet and
13:03
those are very very scary conditions you
13:06
want to be very careful if you hear that
13:08
it's sleeing outside if there is sleep
13:11
that means that everything is very icy
13:13
It's a combination of snow and hail and
13:15
rain and water and it makes everything
13:17
very cold and icy and can be very
13:19
dangerous when you're
13:26
driving and then if we end up combining
13:28
wind wind if things get really windy
13:31
that means the air is just pushing
13:33
everywhere when it's really windy and
13:36
you also add the snow then you end up
13:38
with a
13:45
blizzard often times with a blizzard you
13:49
can't see in front of you because the
13:51
snow is so thick and it's blowing
13:54
everywhere you truly cannot see in the
13:57
blizzard so what what we have here then
14:00
are all the words and the terms that we
14:02
may use when the weather is
14:04
cold and typically for cold we would go
14:07
to
14:11
Winter now in my experience spring is
14:16
usually a combination of both in Spring
14:19
everything blossoms everything that's
14:21
old is New Again everything that has
14:24
been covered in snow or water or rain
14:26
starts to grow back and and there may be
14:30
some wind a lot of times with spring we
14:32
get allergies so when our nose gets all
14:34
stuffy because everything is blowing
14:36
around in the air so spring can truly
14:40
have either one sometimes the Springs
14:42
are cool and they're nice sometimes they
14:45
get very
14:47
rainy sometimes the spring can be warm
14:50
and humid it just depends so I'm just
14:53
going to go with both of these for this
14:56
one because spring really can go either
14:58
way
15:00
way and here in California our weather
15:03
is so different we may have Winters
15:06
where it's dry heat and it's burning up
15:10
it's so strange and then other times
15:13
we'll have a spring where we end up with
15:15
hail or it's very cool so it doesn't
15:18
there's very often times that the
15:20
seasons may not always correspond with
15:23
what these weather temperatures are it
15:26
depends on where you live but at least
15:28
you know how to talk about it and what
15:30
to say and before we go I do want to go
15:34
over some natural
15:49
disasters so a natural disaster is
15:52
anything that happens with the weather
15:54
and the elements that causes major
15:57
problems in our country in our city on
16:01
the land and these natural disasters
16:04
there's four main natural
16:07
disasters we have a
16:11
tsunami which is actually a Japanese
16:14
word that we use here and in a tsunami
16:17
it's typically something that starts way
16:19
out in the ocean there is an earthquake
16:22
of sorts out in the water and it because
16:25
the plates of the Earth have shifted the
16:28
water pulls back and creates a huge wave
16:32
that will land on whatever the First
16:35
Coast is that it hits and when that
16:37
happens you get major
16:46
flooding Whenever there is flooding or
16:49
whenever there is a flood that means
16:52
that there is an excess amount of water
16:54
there is more water than we know what to
16:56
do with and it typically will start to
16:59
rise and it can consume buildings or
17:02
homes or cars and it can be very
17:04
dangerous and with a tsunami there is
17:08
flooding because of that big wave that's
17:10
coming over the ocean and then we also
17:13
have
17:19
hurricanes a hurricane will typically
17:21
start out in the water as well but it
17:24
involves a big cycle of wind and it
17:27
involves wind and and there's usually
17:29
rainstorms and thunder and lightning and
17:32
that huge cycle of wind starts off in
17:34
the ocean and then moves on its way to
17:37
the land when it gets to the land it
17:40
starts to pick up everything in its path
17:43
there's flooding
17:46
again and it also there's rainstorms
17:50
there's damage everywhere hurricanes are
17:52
very very scary and they move very
17:55
quickly so you never know where it's
17:56
going to
17:57
hit another similarity to a hurricane
18:00
would be a
18:04
tornado tornadoes start on land so
18:08
hurricane involves
18:10
water and
18:13
land and a tornado is mostly just land
18:18
it's the same thing it's a huge wind
18:20
tunnel that just starts and as the winds
18:23
get stronger and stronger and stronger
18:26
it will start picking up buildings homes
18:28
cars anything in its path now the only
18:31
nice thing about a tornado is that often
18:33
times you will get a warning they will
18:36
know when a tornado is coming and they
18:38
can kind of guess its path sort of so
18:42
when you have that warning if you live
18:43
in an area where there are tornadoes at
18:46
that point you can take shelter and keep
18:48
your family safe until the tornado has
18:52
passed and then we have earthquakes
18:59
now living in California I've been
19:02
through several earthquakes earthquakes
19:04
are very scary because you don't know
19:06
when they're coming you don't know how
19:09
strong they're going to be and they
19:10
typically don't know any of this until
19:12
they're over so with an earthquake the
19:15
ground is truly shifting and it makes
19:18
everything move and it's very scary so
19:22
the earthquake can go from a mile to 15
19:26
miles and it can be a small small little
19:29
jolt or it can be a rolling wave and
19:33
earthquakes are very scary because we
19:35
never know when they're coming and they
19:36
can cause a lot of damage as Things fall
19:39
over because the ground is
19:40
moving so those are your main ones we
19:43
also have what's called a drought a
19:47
drought is when we have not enough water
19:52
California right now we are in a drought
19:55
we have not gotten enough rain or enough
19:58
flood or anything wet in a very long
20:01
time so everything is very dry our
20:04
rivers are drying up our Lakes are
20:06
drying up and that's because we are in a
20:09
drought we have not had enough
20:13
precipitation or water or rain coming
20:16
into our weather systems to keep
20:18
everything wet and healthy so we are
20:22
what would be then called a drought and
20:25
then another problem that we often have
20:27
is fires
20:29
and with the
20:32
fires a fire in of itself is typically
20:35
not started by weather however it is the
20:39
dryness in the air and the wind that
20:42
comes through that will cause the fire
20:45
to spread and then make it a natural
20:48
disaster so I hope that you have learned
20:51
a bit about weather today and when
20:52
someone asks you what is the weather
20:55
like you will be able to give them an
20:57
answer you'll be able to say it's nice
20:59
or it's cold or I'm freezing or it's
21:02
raining cats and dogs it's another thing
21:05
we like to say that it's raining cats
21:06
and dogs that's just our way of saying
21:08
it's really pouring outside so I hope
21:12
that you all enjoy your weather this
21:14
